방사도(emittance)와 방사율(emissivity)은 흔히 같은 의미로 혼용됩니다. 이들은 단위가 없으며 0에서 1 사이의 값을 가지며, 물체가 방출하는 복사의 정도를 나타냅니다. 일반적으로 방사율은 매끄러운 표면을 지칭할 때 사용되고, 방사도는 표면 형상과 관계없이 적용할 수 있는 보다 포괄적인 용어입니다. 또한 복사 방사도(radiant emittance)는 단위 면적당 방출되는 복사 에너지를 의미하며,
