A thermal profile is a line taken out of an infrared image, showing the temperature variations along that particular line. This type of profile shows in detail one dimension of thermal behavior at very precise points along a line without needing to be straight. Thermal profiles are especially useful by practice for detecting localized temperature gradients, hotspots, and temperature distribution analysis in critical areas of interest. For example, in processes such as welding or thermoforming, engineers might select a thermal profile along a weld seam or mold surface to see if their temperature was within the specified parameters for product quality and material integrity. The thermal profile simplifies this complex thermal behavior through visualization into one easy-to-read graph of thermal data along a line.
To measure a thermal profile with infrared cameras, the camera captures infrared radiation emitted by the object’s surface and converts it into a thermogram, displaying temperatures as colors or shades. The camera is positioned to view the area of interest, and images or videos are recorded over time. These thermograms are analyzed to interpret temperature variations, revealing detailed thermal behavior without contact, making it ideal for monitoring in hazardous or inaccessible areas.
